Meanwhile, no additional deaths were recorded with Covid-19 in Northern Ireland on Tuesday, according to data compiled by the Department of Health, leaving the total number of people who have died in the region at 554. Another five positive cases have been recorded since Monday, bringing the total confirmed infections to 5,761.

Meanwhile in the Republic, where 24 new cases and one death were confirmed yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people have downloaded a new contract tracing app on its first day.

The app from the HSE has been hailed a success by the Health

Donnelly. He said: “Today is a good news day for Covid-19. We have one very simple and very important message for everyone in Ireland and it is this, please download this app.” It uses bluetooth technology to track movements all over the country.

Then, if it is suspected that you have contracted the bug, with your permission it can contact others who also have the app that may be at risk.

Anyone that was within 2m of you for more than 15minutes will receive a ping advising them of your positive test.
