UK bombers smash IS underground lairs in air strikes

- BY CHRIS HUGHES Defence and Security Editor

RAF warplanes have destroyed Islamic State hideouts in a series of air strikes across Iraq.

Typhoon fighter bombers and drones attacked 12 underground lairs in the biggest blow to the terror network in 18 months.

It comes amid fears IS sleepers are rising up across Iraq and could spark more terrorism in the UK.

A military source said yesterday: “This was a significant series of attacks dealing a huge blow to the attempts by this terrorist organisation to make a comeback.

“It is important to the UK because we have seen what happens here if IS are allowed to spread their evil doctrine. They have to be beaten.” Defence bosses revealed they have signed off a new £65million deal to make Protector Drones to help a new and top-secret air war against terror.

The aircraft can also be used in search and rescue missions.
