Tobacco companies may have to pay for discarded fag butts
TOBACCO firms could be forced to pay the cost of cleaning up cigarette butts and empty packets.
Fag ends accounted for twothirds of pieces of litter councils in England spent £663million picking up in 2017-18.
EU member states will force tobacco manufacturers and importers to contribute from July 2021 and it is understood that the UK will adopt a similar policy. The new Environment
Bill includes powers to make firms responsible for the costs of cleaning up their products.
