The good news is that while quite a few insurers stopped selling travel insurance after the pandemic hit, many have now begun offering cover again. But, most of them have exclusions around coronavirus cover. You have either insurers who don’t offer any cover whatsoever around Covid-19, and those who are offering it for emergency medical expenses and repatriation if you contract coronavirus abroad. However, no one is offering new policies with cancellation or

disruption cover – so if things change between booking your holiday and your departure date, you will not be covered should you be unable to go on your break because you have the virus or if you arrive at your destination and you’re turned away due to any subsequent restrictions that may be brought in.

Before booking a holiday you need to double check the Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s advice as you certainly won’t be covered if you travel somewhere that the FCO warns against visiting.

Insurers offering travel insurance and with emergency medical treatment around Covid-19 include Allclear, the Post Office, Saga and Staysure.

You need to ensure you understand exactly what is and isn’t covered before taking out a policy.

Make sure you have a European Health Insurance Card to give you access to healthcare while away.

And do not be tempted to travel without insurance as you could end up out of pocket and facing hefty bills if something happens and you don’t have cover.
