PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM!

With 12-point penalty looming after battling back to safety, keeping Wigan winning and avoiding drop would be career high for Morsy

WIGAN skipper Sam Morsy believes Championship survival will be the greatest moment of his career.

For the second time in a bizarre few months, the Wigan players are showing they have the stomach for the fight to avoid relegation.

The first came in January when defeat at Swansea left them five points from safety.

Having pulled themselves out of trouble with five wins and three draws in the next eight games, the country went into lockdown. They picked up where they left off after the season restarted, only to go into administration in controversial circumstances and now face a 12-point deduction that leaves them back in the heart of the relegation battle.

But a record-breaking 8-0 win against third from bottom Hull in midweek was proof enough of their fighting spirit.

And ahead of today’s trip to relegation rivals Charlton Morsy (right) said: “From where we were, we’ve climbed the mountain and we have to climb another one now. It’s brought the players closer together – it really has – it’s an amazing challenge for us.

“If we can survive, it will go down as one of the biggest accomplishments of all of our careers, something we will always remember.

“When you step over that white line you have to give it absolutely everything, it’s what everyone is trying to do.

“It’s an amazing dressing room, we’re all fighting for each other and the club.

“We have to make sure we are all Championship players next season. It’s what we owe each other, it’s what we owe the management staff and it’s what we owe to the fans.

“There’s a lot of fight in us, we’re giving it our all and in two games’ time we will see if it’s enough. It’s one step at a time, if we can beat Charlton, we put ourselves in an amazing position.”

Charlton are also just outside the drop zone but boss Lee Bowyer does not want to rely on a points deduction to keep his team up. Charlton are still reeling from conceding in injury time at Birmingham on Wednesday to stay firmly in danger and Bowyer said: “I’d rather us stay up on merit – we’ve earned that. If teams get points deductions then they get them. That will happen, I’ve no doubt.

“But we’ve two games left and I still believe we’ll get enough points to stay in the division.”
