KLOPP: MY DAYDREAM BELIEVERS

Jurgen’s greatest feat was converting the doubters... and that belief will be rewarded with the Prem trophy tonight

- BY DAVID MADDOCK @Maddockmirror

WHEN captain Jordan Henderson steps on to the Kop to hoist the Premier League trophy aloft tonight, it will truly be the moment when Liverpool went from doubters to believers.

Only then will Jurgen Klopp allow himself to acknowledge he has completed the most remarkable success of even his illustrious career, in removing the weight of history from this famous club and writing his own legend.

When the German was unveiled at Anfield on October 9, 2015, he explained his biggest task would be to make the people believe again.

They believed under Shankly and Paisley, under Fagan and Dalglish. And now, there is not a single doubter in the new Klopp era.

“This doubters to believers thing, I had absolutely no idea when that came up in my mind to say that. But it was essential that the people really had to go from being supporters to supportive. Essential,” he says of that speech in 2015.

“I had to remind people how important it was to put in a proper performance on the pitch and a proper performance off the pitch. I knew that as I came from a very emotional club – well two, actually – so that was pretty much common sense.

“It is obvious now we have achieved it. But I only said it, the rest is about the people because they had to be ready for it, had to make clear they don’t want to live in the past any more, they don’t want to be angry or disappointed. They had to believe.”

So, how did he do it, how did he turn those doubters into believers? “We did that all together from the first day,” Klopp said. “And how we did it... a lot of good decisions about personnel on the pitch, off the pitch, a lot of effort from all the people. Incredible support of all the people in the club as well, so that’s how things can happen.

“And in the end, a dream came true. That is really special for all of us.”

Now they must savour it, enjoy the Premier

League trophy and those won last year: the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. And Klopp promised one thing to the fans when the time comes for everyone to celebrate together. “There will be an opportunity with all four trophies,” he said.

He wants them to drink it all in tonight (captain Henderson, below) because, after that, the same process applies again. He wants a true Liverpool era.

“It was, for sure, the most exceptional and successful year of my career. Being champion of Europe, England and the world, it doesn’t happen too often,” he added.

“So we will savour it, 100 per cent – this moment you really have to cherish and appreciate.

“It makes sense that we take a picture with all four trophies because I don’t think there are a lot of pictures in existence where a club has all four of these trophies.

“Today, we speak about it but, after that, you will all remind me it is over now. But you don’t have to, because I know. I will be 100 per cent in the next season and will not mention ‘last season’. That is something we have to build on, not rest on.”

And Klopp’s greatest achievement? The fans truly believe that.
