My bid for a Stephen Lawrence Day.. a day to fight all injustice

-

teenager being killed years and years ago?” I want such people to feel so out of step with their own country – as it celebrates a life like Stephen’s cut short by racist violence – that they know they are isolated in a tiny minority. Because the rest of the country is on our side, on the side of justice.

So I decided to leave the Trust and start a standalone body specifically aimed at making Stephen Lawrence Day a highlight of the year.

A day for everyone with a cause which deserves justice. And a day of celebration of what we have achieved – across that year, until that year – and what we are going to achieve in the future.

People kept asking me to say something about the Black Lives Matter movement and the protests pandemic. As we know, black, Asian and ethnic minorities are especially at risk and lives have been lost.

Next April, Stephen Lawrence Day will allow thousands of people, from the very young to the very old, families and friends to show the world that black lives matter by attending our national events.

And this won’t be an improvised protest it will be an official Day, a nationwide expression against injustice and cruelty; a celebration of tolerance and diversity.

It will be a day for all disadvantaged sections of society, for everyone who has suffered prejudice or injustice.

I spoke about the Day in America at a United Nations social change event and there is support for making Stephen Lawrence Day international in future.

So it seems there is a need for people everywhere to have a day to focus on fighting injustice and the global dimension of social media will help us make this happen.

Another matter of international concern is the disproportionate number of deaths from Covid-19 among black, Asian and ethnic minorities.

Labour leader Sir Keir

Starmer asked me to review this and it is a concern for all Western democracies who want to protect their citizens equally.

I hope to report back to him in September. The stories of families involved have been very moving and my research team have gathered a lot of information to greatly inform this crucial debate on saving lives.
