I REFUSE TO SINK

New boy Torres is ready to drop anchor and become a real City hero at the Etihad

HE HAS ripped up the record books in Spain but for Ferran Torres the secret of his success is the bond he shares with his sister Arantxa.

“We have a tattoo (below) on our ankles – an anchor in which are the words, ‘I refuse to sink’,” said Manchester City’s new £20million winger.

“We have gone through difficult times together and we have always come through them and moved forward.”

City’s successful move for highly sought-after Torres marks yet another coup for the deposed champions and could spell trouble for the

Premier League’s fullbacks.

The skilful, direct

20-year-old racked up

100 appearances across three seasons for Valencia as he made himself one of the most promising talents of Europe’s next generation.

For Spain’s Under-19s last July he maintained his towering reputation with both goals in the 2-0 final win over Portugal and a place in the Team of the Tournament.

Last November he became the first player born in 2000 to score a Champions League goal for a Spanish club when he netted the fourth in the 4-1 win over Lille. Yet while he remains the name on everyone’s lips in his homeland, Torres will remain grounded thanks to his sister.

“She’s been through some very difficult and complex times and she has confronted them and come through them,” he said.

“She has her own career, her masters degree and that has a great merit. She has always been superprotective of me.”

Leroy Sane may have defected to Bayern Munich but City now have another speedster – who can play on either wing – set to have fans on the edge of their seats.

No wonder boss Pep Guardiola wasn’t fussed about allowing Sane to leave.

Torres believes he could have even more to offer in other areas should he begin to lose his pace.

“Maybe my best position is on the flanks,” be said.

“But, with the passing years when I get a bit older and perhaps lose a bit of speed and the power I am known for, maybe I will finish playing inside because I have played there.

“Something else they have instilled in me since I was small is that the more positions you can cover on the pitch then the more possibilities you have to play – and the more you can contribute.”
