Praise pours in for ‘a giant’

-

As well as an iconic figure on the political stage, John was a wonderful ambassador for the city and the club. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.

John was a visionary, a peacemaker and a hero. God only knows where we’d be without him.

Hume was an irrepressible optimist whose optimism turned out to be justified. But he also knew alongside hope of a better future there had to be hard graft to make it happen.

No words I can offer can do justice to the immeasurable contribution that John Hume made to this island, except to say he will be missed.

John Hume was one of the greatest persons in Irish history, an advocate for and an architect of peace. He was rightly recognised as a fearless leader who devoted his life to the cause of peace in Northern Ireland.

He led a life that made a difference and leaves a legacy that will live on.

Thank you, John Hume. Respect.

John Hume was quite simply a political giant. He stood proudly in the tradition that was totally opposed to violence and committed to pursuing his objectives by exclusively peaceful and democratic means. His vision paved the way for the stability, positivity and dynamism of the Northern Ireland of today.

There are no words that do the contribution John Hume has made to peace on our island justice.

There will be many great tributes paid to John Hume, a giant of a man, who passed away today.

A titan of Irish politics.

Derry is rightly proud of John and his achievements and today is a day of great sadness and grief.
