THIS was a stark reminder of the alarming lack of quality that exists beyond Manchester United’s established line-up.

Having given his main men the night off, with United’s place in the last eight assured thanks to a 5-0 first-leg lead, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer watched the supporting cast toil in their place.

This limp display certainly endorsed Solskjaer’s case to strengthen his squad with four or five new signings this summer – including No.1 target Jadon Sancho – which is what United need if they are to challenge for the big prizes next season.

It took the introduction of Anthony Martial late on to plunder the winner, with two minutes left, for his 23rd goal of the season.

But players with a point to prove – like Odion Ighalo, Fred, Scott Mctominay, Dan James – all failed to deliver, despite United ultimately edging a hard-earned win.

The mitigating factor for those players was a lack of match sharpness, with Solskjaer (left) having stuck with largely the same starting line-up for the season run-in, with very few changes.

But, even accounting for their lack of minutes and Solskjaer’s reshuffling of his personnel, United should have had enough guile and quality within their line-up to overcome Austrian side LASK.

Of United’s line-up here, only skipper Harry Maguire and Brandon Williams are certain starters for next Monday’s Europa League quarter-final knockout against Copenhagen in Cologne.

One player who could surely have done with a rest ahead of next week’s mini-tournament in Germany, was Maguire (left), but he led the Reds out on his 59th game of the season.

But United’s other established stars were on the bench ahead of next week, including Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Martial.

Chile star Sanchez is taking a huge wage cut to seal the move, with the Italian club paying less than half of what he was due under the terms of the final two years of his Reds deal.
The forward, 31, has been one of the biggest flops in United’s history following his January 2018 switch from Arsenal, scoring just five times in 45 games.
Sanchez (top), who is on loan at Inter, came on as a 70th-minute sub in their 2-0 Europa League last-16 win over Spanish side Getafe last night.
Former United striker Romelu Lukaku (above) and ex-spurs star Christian Eriksen got the goals to put them through to the next round.
Jorge Molina missed a second-half penalty for Getafe after Premier League ref Anthony Taylor consulted the pitch-side monitor before penalising Diego Godin for handball.
Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk beat German side VFL Wolfsburg 5-1 on aggregate after a 3-0 win in the return leg in Kiev. And Copenhagen won 3-0 at home to Turkish champs Istanbul Basaksehir to wipe out a 1-0 first-leg deficit and set-up a quarterfinal showdown with United.
