MEN are most likely to be responsible for traffic collisions in Northern Ireland, police revealed.

A PSNI report into crash trends has highlighted that males are responsible for more than 65% of driver fault collisions and 73% of those that cause serious injury or fatality.

They are also most likely to commit driving offences and to be hurt on the roads.

Men were 59% more likely to be killed or seriously injured on Northern Ireland’s roadways than women. The report said: “Of the 526 fatal and serious collisions in 2019 where the causation was driver/rider responsibility, 363 were the responsibility of a male driver, 129 were caused by a female and 34 responsible were unknown (mainly hit and run or non-stop vehicle).”

Male cyclists were more than six times more likely to be involved in a collision than female ones, with 252 suffering injuries compared to 38.

Eight out of 10 motoring offences are committed by men, with police recording 35,655 to 8,963 by women.

Meanwhile, the top five most dangerous junctions for traffic collisions last year have been revealed.

The Sydenham By-pass/dee Street junction in East Belfast had the most accidents, with 14 taking place within a 50 metre radius of it.

This was followed by the Caw Roundabout/clooney Road junction in Derry, where there were 12 collisions. Three junctions in Belfast saw eight crashes take place within 50 metres – at Andersonstown Road/finaghy Road North, York Street/westlink and Falls Road/donegall Road.

There were 56 fatalities on Northern Irish roads in 2019, 774 people were seriously injured and 8,042 slightly injured.

People over the age of 65 were the most likely to die in a collision and accounted for 36% of fatalities last year, a 25% increase from 2010.

The Causeway Coast and Glens area saw the most road deaths with nine taking place.
