and aggressive’ towards officers who arrived on the scene during the early hours of Friday morning, with reports claiming two of the policemen suffered facial injuries after being hurled to the ground and punched and kicked.

Maguire, along with two others, was forced to spend the night in cells before being taken to the nearby island of Syros, where he was held in custody for a second night and will appear before a state prosecutor today to learn what offences he is being charged with.

The chief prosecutor told local media that he expects Maguire to make his apology at the hearing.

United have launched an internal investigation after contacting Maguire to offer him legal advice – and have ordered him to return to England as soon as possible.

He has been in Mykonos with his fiancee Fern Hawkins, along with United team-mates Marcus Rashford and Brandon Williams. Rashford and Williams were not involved in the trouble.

If Maguire is found to have brought the club’s reputation into disrepute he could be axed as captain by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He will also face a dressing down from England boss Gareth Southgate when he next joins up with the Three Lions squad.

Southgate names his squad on Tuesday for the Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark, but is not expected to pick Maguire.

Maguire only finished his domestic season on Sunday following United’s Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla and is not due to report back for pre-season training at Carrington until September 1.

United issued a statement which included: “Contact has been made with Harry and he is fully cooperating with the Greek authorities.”
