LUK’S HELL AS SEVILLA NET 6

-

ROMELU LUKAKU’S own goal handed Sevilla a record-extending sixth Europa League triumph.

The Belgian, who had put his side ahead with a penalty, stabbed Diego Carlos’ 74th-minute acrobatic effort into his own net as the La Liga outfit fought back to win a thriller in Cologne.

Inter got off to the perfect start when the former Manchester United striker was hauled down by Diego Carlos and referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot, before issuing the fortunate defender with only a yellow card.

Lukaku slotted the resulting spot-kick past Bono to score for the 11th successive game in the competition and the 34th time this season.

That lasted just seven minutes, however, and it was Luuk De Jong who repaired the damage when he dived to meet

Jesus Navas’ cross and power a header past Samir Handanovic on 12 minutes.

Inter boss Antonio Conte found his way into the referee’s notebook for his protests after his team’s appeals for a penalty had been denied.

And Conte’s mood took a further turn for the worse 12 minutes before the break when De Jong rose to send a header past Handanovic.

But Sevilla’s joy was short-lived as Diego Godin got his head to Marcelo Brozovic’s inviting cross to level within three minutes.

Lukaku squandered a second half opportunity when he was denied by Bono after being played in by Nicolo Barella.

But Carlos turned from villain to hero when his overhead kick was deflected into the net by Lukaku (above).

Sub Alexis Sanchez had an effort cleared off the line by Jules Kounde as Sevilla clung on.
