STEVIE WARNS STRIKER HE NOW HAS OPTIONS

- BY GARY RALSTON

STEVEN GERRARD has left the door open for Alfredo Morelos’ first team return but warned him that he’s no longer the one-man attacking band at Ibrox.

The Rangers boss admits the attitude of the Colombian striker has been much improved after he was axed last week against Kilmarnock.

But the arrival of

Kemar Roofe (right) and Cedric Itten and the imminent return of Jermain Defoe from injury has handed Gerrard an embarrassment of striking riches.

The future of Morelos remains shrouded in doubt, with Lille continuing to lurk in the fringes and a top team return at Hamilton today is far from certain. Gerrard said: “We have definitely seen a difference in Alfredo’s application. He has refocused himself into training well and working hard this week.

“As a manager you analyse your players on a daily basis and pick the ones you think are going to get you the right result. You don’t pick on name or reputation.” He added: “Last week we made a decision for the benefit of the team and the squad.

“Cedric and Kemar came in and I thought their application was really good. I was really happy with their performance considering it was their first starts.

“There were really positive signs, with Kemar getting off the mark and Cedric’s workrate. We’re in much better shape from an attacking point of view in terms of options. We’re not heavily reliant on one person.”

Rangers have yet to concede a goal in Premiership football this season with four wins from five and a goalless draw at Livingston.

However, Gerrard believes it will be another month before he knows if his team are up for a title tilt. He said: “It’s been a solid start, a strong start, but it’s very early days in terms of comparing us to previous seasons.”

Allan Mcgregor will compete with Jon Mclaughlin to start in goal after recovering from the knock that has kept him out for the last four games, while Leon Balogun is back from a quad strain.
