GO OUT ALF & BEAT COISTY THE LEGEND

- BY GAVIN BERRY

STEVEN GERRARD challenged Alfredo Morelos to smash Ally Mccoist’s European scoring record after the Colombian moved to within one strike of the Rangers legend’s 21-goal haul.

But the Light Blues boss warned Morelos he’ll have to stay and help bring major silverware to Ibrox before he can be put in the same bracket as

Mccoist.

Morelos bagged a brace - his second the club’s landmark 500th in

European competition - after coming on at half-time in last night’s 5-0 romp over Lincoln Red Imps to set up a Europa League third qualifying round trip to Holland next week against Willem II.

The Colombian netted either side of fellow substitute Jermain Defoe – who made his first competitive appearance of the season – after first half goals from James Tavernier and Connor Goldson. Kemar Roofe limped off during the first half in Gibraltar but Gerrard is hoping his calf problem isn’t serious ahead of Sunday’s trip to Easter Road for which he’ll welcome back Leon Balogun. Morelos was top scorer in the Europa

League last season and looked back to his best after being stretchered off in the weekend win over Dundee United.

And as he edges closer to Mccoist’s record, Gerrard (inset) said: “It’s superb for him. I’m sure he is aware of that and has it in his sights.

“They are two terrific goalscorers but I don’t think we can yet discuss Alfredo in the same breath as Ally Mccoist because one won trophies here, one made this team champions and winners. “Alfredo has yet to do that. It’s certainly an incentive and a good title to get but for me he’s not ready to be discussed in the same breath as Ally Mccoist just yet. But he could be if he is around long enough.”

Gerrard was pleased with the professional job of his side in the Victoria Stadium but admitted they’ll have to be much better against Willem II – who defeated Progres Niederkorn by the same 5-0 scoreline 24 hours earlier.

The Gers boss said: “I won’t look back at this game because I won’t take much from it in terms of the performance. We know we’ve got really tough challenges ahead in the next couple of weeks.

“And we need to get back to our proper level of performance, it wasn’t there despite winning the game comfortably.

“We watched Willem II on Wednesday, they’ve got really dangerous players at the top end of the pitch and any team from Holland who finished in the top six deserves respect.”
