A TRAINEE lifeguard has been given a 12-month probation order after secretly recorded a teenage girl in the toilets of a leisure centre.

Caolan Mccreesh, 25, from Camlough Road, Camlough, Co Armagh, pleaded guilty to voyeurism and att empting to make an indecent photograph of a child on November 10, 2019.

The court was told the defendant had been in the uni sex toi lets at Newr y Leisure C entre when he placed his phone underneath a cubicle to record a 15-yearold girl in undress.

Defence barrister Justin Byrne said his client, who had no record, did not know the injured party was underage at the time, “however, that is no excuse”.

He added: “He was going through a difficult time and was suffering from mental health problems. He is now getting treatment with his GP and is in a better place.

“I would ask that the court does not seek a Sexual Offences Prevention Order as this is his first offence.

“It would make it difficult for him to establish relationships in the future.” District Judge Eamonn King alluded to impact statements from the teenage victim and her mum.

He told the Newry court: “I would hope the injured party and her mother can put this matter behind them. The daughter was not at fault.”

Under the probation order Mccreesh is barred from having an electronic device with a camera, being in a relationship and being in child central locations without the prior permission of a probation risk manager.

His name will now automatically appear on the sex offenders register due to the age of his victim.

I hope they can put this matter behind them JUDGE EAMONN KING NEWRY COURT
