seems largely irrelevant for Ireland as Ireland have not got a penalty in over four years!

“Robbie Brady was the last one in the Euros against France. It hasn’t been largely relevant but it’s interesting nonetheless.

“James Mcclean and Shane Long, above, scored two penalties in a match against Slovakia before the Euros, a friendly in Dublin.

“But Ireland as a nation have not had a penalty in over four years.”

A decade ago, when Ireland last played in Slovakia, Robbie Keane missed a peno in a Euro qualifying 1-1 draw in

Zilina under Giovanni Trapattoni.

But quizzed on VAR, Kenny continued: “The offsides are clear cut but the handball decisions have been somewhat controversial.

“You can’t ignore it and we have discussed it. It’s something we’re all learning about and discipline is important.

“When you get to a big game like this, you need 11-men on the pitch.”

Tonight’s semi-final could also be settled in a shootout and Ireland have practiced penalties all week.

Kenny refused to reveal his takers and – mindful of Slovakian spies – the squad did not take any during their light training session at the match venue last night.

But Matt Doherty insists he won’t hesitate putting his name forward if it’s needed.

The defender said: “My hand would be straight up and I’d definitely take a penalty. I’d definitely be one to take the responsibility.”

Unlike the Nations League games, Ireland and Slovakia can also use five substitutes tonight rather than three – and an additional one if extra-time is required.
