On last night’s telly

IOut Of Her Mind, BBC2 ★★★ t was fairly apt that this new semi-autobiographical comedy from Mock The Week’s Sara Pascoe had been infused with Alice In Wonderland imagery.

Because after spending 10 minutes in her strange world you could have been forgiven for declaring “I’m late for a very important date – with another channel”.

It didn’t help that she appeared to have decided that a lead character who felt like a cross between Miranda and Russell Brand was what we all needed right now.

Her opening line – “I’m Sara Pascoe and I’m going to destroy your faith in love” – didn’t suggest we were in for a laughterfest either.

Luckily, she managed to assemble

a very impressive list of co-stars. Despite her protestations that “other people just ruin everything” they just about saved last night’s series opener from descending into an infuriating self-indulgent mess.

So far we’ve met Pascoe’s sister Lucy (Fiona Button), her mum Carol (Juliet Stevenson), her ex-flatmate Scoopy (Cariad Lloyd) and her new reluctant pal Luna (Cash Holland).

Each of them was instantly more likeable than the Pascoe character.

Given the show deals with what it’s like to be a thirtysomething woman whose nearest and dearest are coupling up and having babies, I guess I’m not the target audience.

However, the likes of Fleabag have managed to make similar themes a lot more accessible.

And a good deal funnier.
