-

negotiations with more than a dozen of Europe’s top clubs after securing £4.6billion of funding with US banking giant JP Morgan.

But the idea has provoked a furious reaction from leading figures in the game. Sky pundit and former Manchester United star Gary Neville branded it “obscene”.

Neville said: “It’s another wound for football.

“You can’t have a

$6bn dollar conversation with JP Morgan while not funding grassroots football, EFL clubs and making sure fans can afford it.

“It’s obscene. Football is going to eat itself soon. Fans will turn away.

supporting. That can’t be allowed to happen.”

La Liga president Javier Tebas said: “The authors of this idea - if they really exist - not only show a total ignorance of the organisation and customs of European and world football, but also a serious ignorance of the audiovisual rights markets.

“These underground projects only look good when drafted at a bar at five in the morning.”

The Premier League’s Big Six have been sounded out. Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-germain would also be seen as major players.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is believed to be a major force behind the proposal, with Spanish clubs envious of the wealth of the Premier League.
