POTTER’S POINTING OUT FEAR

- BY MIKE WALTERS

GRAHAM POTTER admits he is worried by Brighton’s high marks for artistic merit but low harvest of points.

Albion outplayed Manchester United, Crystal Palace and, for long periods, big spenders Chelsea but had just one point to show for their efforts.

Their only win to date came at Nenewcastle, and Potter hopes ho former England s striker Danny Welbeck ( left) will add firepower.

Defeat by struggling st West Brom ton tonight would crank up the ananxiety at the Amex, and Potter (top) admitted: “It’s always a concern when you don’t get the points you want.

“As much as I sit here and try to be philosophical about it, we want to win games.

“I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a level of concern but not in relation to the performances because I’m happy with those. The challenge for me, understandably, is to turn them into points.”

Welbeck has much to prove after scoring just 18 Premier League goals in the last six injury-hit seasons. He tore up his contract at Watford after 12 months, but Potter said: “He’s only 29 years old and age isn’t so important to me. He has a lot of time ahead of him.

“It can happen in a career that, for whatever reason, it doesn’t happen at one club. There could be lots of factors, but from our perspective we have a guy with incredible experience, a proven quality.

“You don’t play for the clubs he’s played for, and play for England the times he has, without that quality. Yes, he’s probably had a bit of a setback but he still wants to prove he can play at this level.”

Potter believes Welbeck and ex-liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana’s experience will give Brighton the know-how to pick their way through the long grass of another potentially difficult campaign.

But he added: “You want to improve the squad, yet it doesn’t always work out as it’s not an exact science.”
