Melania shuns Don.. as Jill props up Joe
Biden’s wife takes centre stage as US poll battle hots up
THE wives are out in the race for the White House but only one has been a constant presence at her husband’s side on the campaign trial.
While Jill Biden resolutely stands by her man, First Lady Melania Trump has made few appearances, and in one of them she whipped her hand away as her husband tried to take a hold of it.
Democrat candidate Joe Biden, 77, had help from Jill, 69, when he appeared to confuse President Donald Trump with the former leader George Bush.
Biden was speaking to George Lopez, who was hosting the I Will Vote virtual concert on Sunday, when he said: “Four more years of George, um, George, gonna find ourselves in a position where if Trump gets elected, we’re gonna be in a different world.”
George W Bush was in office in 2008, when Biden was on the presidential ticket with Barack Obama.
Jill, sitting at Biden’s side, appeared to prompt him, muttering “Trump” under her breath, in another example of her support for her husband.
She has been one of the Biden campaign’s stalwarts, participating in numerous virtual fundraisers and rallies.
When not with her husband, she has hosted drive-in rallies, virtual fundraisers and other events alone.
It is in stark contrast to 74-year-old Trump’s wife Melania, 50, who has set a precedent by failing to be seen supporting her husband on the road.
Her only appearances have been at the Republican National Convention, the two Presidential TV debates, and in June when Trump launched his re-election campaign in Florida.
US conspiracy theorists even believe Trump uses a double for the First Lady so that it seems they are happy together.
Yesterday, the President jumped on Biden’s mentions of “George”, tweeting: “Joe Biden called me George yesterday. Couldn’t remember my name. Got some help from the anchor to get him through the interview. The Fake News Cartel is working overtime to cover it up.”
Trump used the incident to cast doubt on Biden’s mental ability, which he has repeatedly attacked in the run-up to the poll on Novermber 3.
He has often referred to Biden as “Sleepy Joe” while accusing him of “being in his basement” rather than out on the road on the campaign trail.
While Biden appeared virtually at the I Wi l l Vo t e concert, Trump and Melania appeared at the annual White House Halloween event yesterday.
The first couple came out to the sound of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, holding hands and waving to the crowd.
They did not wear face masks as they greeted the children, who walked in a line in front of them at the South Portico of the White House, but who kept socially distanced. Most of the youngsters did wear face coverings. Two of them stole the show after dressing up as Trump and the First Lady.
The President seemed particularly taken by the young boy, who had a blond wig on, and was dressed like Trump in a suit and red tie.
“He likes the press,” Trump said as the youngster turned to the cameras. White House press secretar y Kayleigh Mcenany, who like Trump tested positive for Cov i d-19 earli er thi s month , carried h er 11-month-old daughter – dressed up in a mouse costume – to meet Trump and Melania.
The trick-ortreating event dates back to 1958, when the then-first Lady Mamie Eisenhower decorated the White House for Halloween. In one break with tradition, no sweets were handed out to the children this year due to the pandemic.
