Brunei mourns for Prince Azim

THE party-loving son of the Sultan of Brunei has died at the age of 38.

Prince Azim of Brunei, who was a Hollywood film producer, died on Saturday morning in the capital of Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan.

Although a cause of death was not released by the Brunei royal family, Azim, who was fourth in line to throne, had suffered from liver cancer.

Azim was well known for throwing lavish parties for Hollywood A-listers and been photograph­ed with celebritie­s including Pamela Anderson, Helen Mirren and Michael Jackson.

Mick Jagger’s daughter Lizzy and her mum Jerry Hall were guests at his 30th birthday bash at Th e D orch e st e r i n London in 2012.

Singer Mariah Carey, and actresses Stephanie Beacham, Raquel Welch and Marisa Tomei were also at the party.

At one of his bashes guests reportedly received £20,000 goody bags filled with original oil paintings, a dental make-over and a voucher for a Kenyan safari.

Royces. Prince Azim’s own fortune was estimated to be a relatively modest £3.84billion, some of which he ploughed into his London-based film company. He had successes with 2014 drama You’re Not You, starring Hilary Swank, and 2018 release, The Happy Prince, which starred Emily Watson, Colin Firth and Rupert Everett.

Last year Azim’s father was widely criticised after he announced that anyone convicted of having gay sex i n Br u n e i , a n Is l a mi c country, would be executed. After a major boycott of hotels which he owns around the world, Sultan Bolkiah abandoned his plans a month later.

The Sultan has ordered a seven-day period of mourning f or hi s son . Neighbouri­ng countries last night paid tribute. The Indonesian embassy said Prince Azim “wi l l alway s b e remembered fondly”.

And the Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong said Azim “was known f or his kind and generous spirit, and for his dedication to charitable, educationa­l, and youth causes”.

Azim is survived by his father and mother Hajah Mariam, an ex-air stewardess who was the Sultan’s second wife.
