Shock when doc said weight was killing me
Moment Jayne had to change
A BRIDAL hairdresser lost more than a third of her bodyweight after suffering blood clots in her lungs and a mini stroke while overweight.
Jayne Johnson was 21 stone and a size 26 after years of calorie-laden takeaways.
The mum of four grownup children says: “People told me... I was lucky I had a fat face because it meant I didn’t have wrinkles.
“Although I smiled and tried to shrug it off, the comments hurt.”
In 2018 Jayne, 47, who lives in Cromer, Norfolk, got stabbing pains in her left leg so bad she struggled to walk.
A couple of days later her husband Patrick, 49, took her to hospital as she had begun “gasping for breath”.
A CT scan found a deep vein thrombosis in her leg had got to both lungs and they were full of blood clots.
Jayne was given blood thinners and told to rest. But she says: “Over the next few months, I piled on more weight and at my heaviest, I was up to 21 stone. I couldn’t get through a bride’s hair without stopping to stick my head out of the window for air. I was constantly in and out of hospital, needing oxygen.”
She says of suffering a mini stroke: “I woke up one day with muddled speech and I’d lost feeling on one side.”
Then sleep apnoea was diagnosed. Jayne says: “I began waking up in the night choking. I had to wear a mask to regulate my breathing, which was very uncomfortable.”
In July 2019 a doctor told Jayne her life was at risk and last October, she began the Cambridge Weight Plan.
She says: “I was on a strict diet of 800 calories a day... as the pounds came off, it motivat ed me. A s my weight dropped, my breathing felt easier and my energy slowly returned.”
Now Jayne weighs 12st 12lbs, is a size 12 and works as a CWP consultant.
She says: “I feel incredible. Patrick says it’s like having a new wife.”
