150 goals, 100% consistency, but NO trophies is why you can’t yet compare Kane to other goal greats

-

MUCH fanfare about Harry Kane scoring his 150th Premier League goal and congratulations to him for that.

Is Kane the most consistent English striker of his generation?

Yes, 100 per cent.

Is he the most talented English striker of his generation?

Absolutely, he ticks that box as well.

But just because someone has reached a particular landmark, i t d o e s n’ t automatically mean they should be compared with others who have reached it too.

And i f Al a n S h e a re r, Thierry Henry, Andrew Cole, Robbie Fowler and Frank Lampard – who was the best goalscoring midfielder of his generation – are my five greatest Premier League attackers of all time, then I’d be putting Kane in the next five, alongside Jermain Defoe. Now, Defoe is in the top 10 because he was consistent over a number of years, but we’d never talk about him with the same reverence as the other five I’ve mentioned.

And the same goes for Kane, because I just don’t think h e has th e same X factor they all had.

His goals haven’t been influential and instrumental in his team winning major trophies like theirs were.

Cole’s helped Manchester

Unit ed to f iv e P re mi e r League titles and a Treble, Lampard’s helped Chelsea win Premier Leagues, a Champions League, Europa League, FA Cups and League Cups, and Fow l er w on trophies at Liverpool and had an incredible goals-togames ratio.

As for Henry, he is the best and most talented striker to have played in the Premier League, he won trophies with Arsenal and is a World Cup winner as well. Shearer ‘only’ won a single trophy with Blackburn – the Premier League – but devoured goals in a way that Kane does not.

Now, Kane is still only 27 and might go on to get 200-plus.

He mi g h t e v e n b e a t Shearer’s record of 260 one day. But, even if he does, I’d still take Shearer at his best over Kane at his best any day of the week.

I remember watching a lot of Kane’s early football at Tottenham in the FA Cup,

League Cup and Europa League and, at that stage, you thought he’d be lucky to play 50 Premier League games for the club before being sold to Millwall for something like £1.2million.

And if any Spurs fan tells me they didn’t think the same back then, they’re lying, because that was the trajectory he was on.

So for Kane to have gone on to become a 150-goal Premier League striker and a World Cup Golden Boot winner is phenomenal. They are elite numbers and I don’t want that to get lost.

But if Shearer was a RollsRoyce Phantom, Henry was a Bugatti Veyron and Fowler, Cole and Lampard were all Ferrari Testarossas, then Kane is a Range Rover Vogue.

He’s e x c e p t i o n a l a n d reliable, and has some really nice gadgets and gizmos.

But he ain’t got that thing that makes you go wow, and that’s the difference.
