Colt worth a punt to open to his account for Smith and Spoonful Syndicate

- BY PETER O’HEHIR

HAVING his second run since arriving from Germany, Irish Poseidon is napped to continue trainer Matt Smith’s rich vein of form in today’s Dundalk opener, the Irishinjuredjockeys.com Handicap, over a mile and a half.

The four-year-old triumphed twice, once on turf and once on an all-weather surface in Germany. And the son of Poseidon Adventure ran a cracker on his Irish debut, at this venue last week, when backed into 9/4 favouritism.

After a tardy start, Sam Ewing was soon i n touch and, mounting a challenge in the straight he stayed on in good style to finish a close third – beaten less than a half-length – behind Romann in a blanket finish.

With that run under his belt and stepping-up in trip, with Ewing again on board, Irish Poseidon might be capable of registering his first win for Smith and the Spoonful Of Irish Syndicate.

The divisions of the Dundalkstadium.com Median Auction 2-Y-0 Maiden lo o k c ompetitiv e. But champion-jockey Colin Keane, on his first day back after his Breeders Cup heroics in Keeneland, might land the first division on the once-raced Offiah for his boss Ger Lyons and owner David Spratt.

A son of New Bay, this colt showed signs of inexperience early on his debut here last month. But he came from last place to fill third spot behind Soaring Sky and Zozimus.

That experience will stand to the Glenburnie colt and, unless there’s a smart newcomer, he might be capable of opening his account.

Victory for Offiah would accentuate the prospects of 89-rated Zozimus in th e sec ond div i sion of thi s one-mile maiden.

This consistent Footstepsinthesand colt has gone close in the last three of his seven starts, failing by a short-head twice. Last time he was beaten a couple of necks by Lough Derg and the ultra-consistent Colour Sergeant, with well-regarded Jeroboam back in fourth.

With first-time blinkers expected to aid his concentration. Zozimus sets a decent standard.
