No bad blood between the Queen & Mag

- BY PAUL ROUTLEDGE Ingham & Thatcher

MARGARET Thatcher’s press secretary Sir Bernard Ingham yesterday di smi ssed claims of t ensions between Thatcher and the Queen.

He accused The Crown’s writers of knowing nothing of the Tory PM’S relationship with Her Majesty.

Sir Bernard, 88, Chief Press Secretary in Downing Street from 1979 to 1990, said: “You could argue that anybody could say anything about it, because they don’t know.

“It was entirely confidential .

People simply don’t know what the relationship was. I don’t, except that the Prime Minister had a reverence for the constitution and the Queen.

“Knowing Mrs Thatcher, I can reject some of the idiotic ideas that float around, like a tetchy relationship... there can be no truth in that.”

However Sir Bernard, who said he would not be watching the Netflix series, did confirm one anecdote about the Iron Lady’s weekly meetings as PM with the Queen.

He said: “I sometimes wonder how she managed to get up, she curtsied so low!”

BLUE Margaret Thatcher that showing all sides of that kind of character becomes even more vitally important and challenging.

“I think I pretty much watched everything there was to watch on her.” Hair and make-up artist Cate Hall said of Mrs Thatcher’s hairdos: “Thatcher was a highly practical woman... there were instances in her diary where she marked hair appointments, but also examples where she’d ask for heated rollers and

hairspray to be left in her room so she could do it herself.”

Costume designer Amy Roberts explained how the Tory leader’s outfits changed over time, saying: “We see her evolving from the early pale oatmeal coloured, softly tailored suit to the famous electric, pleated skirt suit.

“As she increases in power, she adopts the ‘power dressing’ of the 1980s.”

One of Gillian’s outfits is an exact replica of the blue suit Thatcher wore when first elected as Prime Minister.
