Andy’s life brought to book

Legendary music mag Jockey Slut pays tribute to DJ

-

Ijust scrolled through my Facebook feed for a good few minutes and literally every single post was about him,” wrote JD Twitch (circled) in his heartfelt tribute to his friend Andrew Weatherall.

“A hundred different stories about how much he had positively impacted different people’s lives. A hundred broken hearts.

“When someone leaves us it is often the case that people fall over themselves to say what a great person they were. With Andrew, it is all true. He was the best of humanity. A gentleman.”

The reaction to Andrew’s sudden passing in February this year was unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Outside of the musical genius he clearly was, the effect he had on the lives he came into contact with was universally unforgettable.

Tributes the likes of JD’S intertwined with hilarious and lifeaffirming anecdotes from a career spent at the cutting edge of undererground music.

The Guv’nor’s early days, the late 80’s at the legendary Shoom alongside Danny Rampling and Terry Farley, grew into the iconic Boys Own label and series of parties, then the Screamadelica years that rubber stamped Andy’s talent as one of the most eclectic and unique in all of music.

He was f orever vocal and passionate about humour and enjoying life. He was philosophical, beyond wise and utterly magnetic company. He was an incredibly deep thinker and a musical pioneer like no other.

In all, Andrew was one of the most i nteresting and curious pp people in the history of music and in celebration ce of that, le legendar y music m mag Jockey Slut is p producing a new b book celebrating h his life and work. J Jockey Slut was our go-to music bible back i n t h e d ay, launched in Man c h e st e r a s a bi-monthly fanzine in 1993 and ran until 2004. Its focus was primarily dance music and club culture, though rock, indie and other scenes also featured – thus Weatherall was its personification and a cover interview favourite.

The mag has collated interviews, articles and a new 10,000-word oral history into a 160-page volume on Andrew.

It includes all of Andrew’s Jockey Slut interviews from over the years, plus numerous articles spanning the breadth of his career, from the mid-’80s to 2020.

The new, 10,000-word oral history will feature interviews with the likes of Bobby Gillespie, Danny Rampling, Keith Tenniswood (AKA Radioactive Man), our very own David Holmes and more.

This will be a simply magnificent publication and all proceeds from Andrew Weatherall: A Jockey Slut Tribute will go to Weatherall’s favourite charities: Amnesty International, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Thrombosis UK and Crisis.

The 160 page, perfect bound book, costs £15 and copies will be sent out by December 10. To pre-order, go to jockeyslut.ochre. store and complete the needful.

A hundred different stories about how much he had positively impacted different people’s lives.
