FODEN IS LET OUT OF THE FREEZER

- BY JOHN CROSS

PHIL FODEN is ready to come back in from the cold against Iceland at Wembley tonight.

Gareth Southgate has confirmed he is set to give the Manchester City starlet his first England start since he was sent home From Iceland after breaking protocols.

Foden, 20, was axed from the squad last month as punishment, but came on as a sub against

Ireland last week and manager Southgate said the midfielder has proved he is ready to return.

He said: “Given the players in the squad and the way it has emerged and evolved over the week, it will be good to get Phil into the game.

“I am sure he has relished the chance to be back with the squad.

“We know he is a very exciting talent and he is a player who we have a lot of belief in and who Man City have a lot of belief in, so this could be a good chance for him to show everybody what he can do.

“I made sure we chatted on the first day and put that behind us immediately. From then on it was a judgment on football.

“As the week has gone on he has been more relaxed. I gave him a bit of a hiding at two-touch yesterday, which he was probably a little bit upset about! But he is relaxed and that’s what’s important because to be able to play his football properly that’s where everyone needs to be.”

Southgate has got Harry Kane (left) leading the attack against Iceland. And he even suggested that Foden (right) could play with Jack Grealish just behind the frontline as the England boss reiterated he is determined to carry on using the 3-4-3 formation.
