Microplastic found on top of Mt Everest
MICROPL ASTIC S have been found near the top of Mount Everest.
The potentially harmful fibres come from polyester, acr ylic, nylon and polypropylene used for climbers’ clothing, tents and ropes.
The highest were 27,690ft up the 29,029ft site between Nepal and China. A study suggests they could have been left by expeditions to the world’s highest peak.
Alternatively, they could have been blown up from lower levels by high winds.
Microplastics have now been found from the bottom of our deepest oceans to the Arctic.
Study lead author and National Geographic explorer Dr Imogen Napper said: “This is a timely reminder that we need to do more.”
