5,000 shower units to be checked following fire
SHOWERS at 5,000 Housing E xe c u t iv e h o me s a re b e i n g checked after one at a property in North Belfast went up in flames.
Two firefighting crews scrambled to the blaze sparked by “an electric shower” at Ladbrook Drive, Ardoyne, on Sunday at 4.42pm. A NIFRS spokesperson said: “Firefighters found an electric shower on fire. The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition.”
A spokesperson for the social housing group said they have “instigated a joint programme to inspect homes where a specific model of shower unit have been installed” following the incident.
Only properties fitted with the Triton Safeguard+ shower unit, produced between May 2014 and D e c e mb e r 2 0 1 6 , a re b e i n g inspected.
A Housing Executive spokesperson said they have met with manufacturers Triton Showers and they have already checked more than 2,300 of the units. They added: “We will be in contact with tenants, but if anyone is concerned they can check th e shower unit themselves.”
