Martin urged Tories to hold full inquiry on Pat’s murder, says MP son
THE Taoiseach has asked the Prime Minister to ensure a full public inquiry is held into the murder of Pat Finucane, his son said.
John Finucane added Micheal Martin engaged with Boris Johnson ahead of next Monday’s deadline for No 10 to respond to a UK Supreme Court ruling.
Th e S i n n Fe i n MP said Mr Martin had been “unequivocal” in giving the family his support.
Yesterday, he told a Dail committee: “He didn’t need us to explain to him the significance and importance and the need for an inquiry into the murder of my father.
“And he committed to and I understand has already engaged with Boris Johnson on this issue.”
This week, Mr Martin said Downing Street “must” hold an inquiry into the North Belfast killing.
COLLUSION
Pat Finucane, 39, was shot by loyalists in front of his family in 1989 amid claims of State collusion.
Last year, the Supreme Court ruled investigations into the solicitor’s death fell short of international human rights standards.
Tory Secretary of State Brandon Lewis indicated a decision over how the Government will proceed will be announced.
A motion to establish a judicial inquiry was agreed at the Implementation of t h e G o o d Fr i d a y committee yesterday.
Mr Finucane said one of the key moments in the family’s justice campaign was when then Prime Minister David Cameron apologised for the State’s collusion in the killing.
And he insisted an independent inquiry was the “only mechanism” that could “fully grasp all of the issues” involved.
He added: “We are no longer interested in who pulled the trigger, we want to know who pulled the strings and it is time the British Government live up to promises they made.”
