Lotto winners cook up curry to feed hundreds of homeless during lockdown

BIG-HEARTED Bill and Cath Mullarkey saw local charity workers feed stranded lorry drivers in Kent at Christmas and cooked up a plan.

They would use some of their £1million lotto winnings to bring a taste of the West Indies to the needy in their home city, Coventry, during lockdown.

Bill, 60, said: “I was inspired and wanted to help them look after homeless people in

Coventry.”

The trained chefs designed a dish based on a curry from Cath’s native

Saint Lucia, in the

Caribbean.

They worked with a cook from the Langar Aid charity to create the curry and bought all the ingredients, dishes, drinks and snacks to be handed out in Coventry.

The couple, who landed their Euromillions jackpot in 2017, wanted to “do their bit” to help during lockdown.

Warwick University chef Jim Eaves, who volunteers at Langar Aid, cooked and packed the curries, which were donated to homeless and vulnerable people outside Langar Aid’s Coventry HQ. Bill said: “Ordinarily, Cath and I would have gone into the kitchens and cooked everything.

“But working with the chef was the best way of still making a difference while minimising contact.

“As Cath is from Saint Lucia we went for a Caribbean curry – a vegetable and coconut curry with a side order of rice and peas plus drinks. We also handed over lots of chocolate bars, too, as treats.”

Cath, 59, said, “Jim was brilliant. We chatted through meal ideas. Everything is vegetarian, even the cutlery.

“He and the other volunteers give up their spare time and stand out in all weathers. I am in awe of the work that they do.

“That’s why Bill and I wanted to also give something to the volunteers as well, to say thank you.”

Avtar Kaur, Project Manager at Langar Aid, said: “Thank you, Bill and Cath. It was great to see so many people enjoy their Caribbean curry.”
