Man ‘stalked’ nurse every day since Christmas

- BY GEORGE JACKSON

A MAN charged with harassing a nurse turned up at her home every day since Christmas, a court heard yesterday.

A police officer told Derry Magistrates’ Court the woman called the police on Tuesday after Adam Doherty, 26, arrived in her front garden and refused to leave.

The nurse, who lives with her mother, told police he sometimes let himself in through the property. The officer said: “She said she made him aware many times she does not want contact but he continued to ignore this and called her up to 10 times a day.”

The witness added the nurse had been in a “non-intimate relationship” with Doherty in 2015.

He has also turned up at Altnagelvin Hospital where she works. After a night shift last

Friday morning he was outside waiting for her.

The witness told the court: “She said he followed her to her car and got in and refused to leave. She drove to Strand Road police station with him. He again refused to get out and tried to kiss her and tried to reach for her car keys.

“She told the police the defendant said to her, ‘If you keep rejecting me I’m going to get more heavy handed, more forceful’.” The witness said following his arrest on Tuesday outside the nurse’s home, Doherty became aggressive.

Judge Sean O’hare said he was not prepared to release him on bail “at this stage until someone guarantees me in the form of a surety you will stay away from her and stay away from the hospital”.

He was remanded in custody to Maghaberry Prison for two weeks.
