On last night’s telly

IJoanna Lumley’s Home Sweet Home – Travels In My Own Land, ITV ★★★★ f Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek is planning another movie in her gothic horror series The Crows Have Eyes she could do worse than to give Joanna Lumley a call.

Joanna looked fabulous all gothed up on ITV last night as she rounded off the first part of this tour of Britain with a visit to Whitby. Having travelled all over the world making documentaries, Joanna last year decided it was time to see some of the places that she hadn’t visited in the UK.

Handily, for Joanna and ITV, this decision coincided with the overseas travel disruption caused by Covid-19.

With so many of us looking a little closer to home for our summer breaks this year, it was full of great ideas.

That said, when Joanna told us that the spectacular Lumley Castle in County Durham is “now a hotel that everyone can enjoy” I had my reservations. Or rather I didn’t. If you want to stay in the suite she stayed in you’re unlikely to get much change out of 300 quid a night this summer.

I’ll probably just go and visit another famous castle in the area instead. Test my eyes while I’m there. Similarly, I can’t imagine we would all be allowed to test drive the Goldfinger Aston Martin at Silverstone or have a private audience with Ken Barlow inside the Rovers.

Still, there was plenty we could do.

As well as spooky Whitby, the Lake District is now on my list – if only for the train ride from Settle to Carlisle.

I might give Eyam a miss though. I think I’ve heard enough about plagues for one year.
