The SPECIAL WONDER

Jose: I wasn’t going to single anyone out but the team so depends on Harry.. he’s one of the best in the world... period

- BY JOHN CROSS

JOSE MOURINHO broke a promise to himself by singling out Harry Kane for special praise after his remarkable return to save Tottenham.

Kane came back just 11 days after suffering what had been feared was a serious ankle injury. He dug Spurs out of their losing three-game run by scoring the opening goal in a vital win.

The England captain is now joint-second highest scorer in Spurs history with

208 goals, level with Bobby Smith. Only the legendary Jimmy Greaves has more, and it is the seventh season running Kane has scored more

than 20. Tottenham boss Mourinho admitted he wanted to praise the team performance, but could not help but single out Kane.

He said: “He is one of the best strikers in the world. Period. There is nothing else to say and the team depends a lot on him, I cannot hide that. It’s the goal he can score, it’s the assist he can make, he’s the link player that he is.

“He has that personality the top players have and he’s always a very important influence for us. But I promised I was not going to speak about individuals because I was so happy with the players.”

Mourinho also heaped praise on the way his team (including Pierre-emile Hojbjerg, left) responded after losing to Chelsea, which had left his own position under pressure following Spurs’ worst run since 2012.

He added: “I’m not used to losing three matches in a row and Tottenham is the same.

“Today they went on to the pitch with only one thing in their mind – to win.”
