Just grind and bear it Spurs

-

JUDGING by the reaction of Tottenham fans to their 5-4 defeat at Everton in the FA Cup, some of them would rather play entertaining football and lose than grind out wins.

Sport is part of the entertainment industry and I understand that fans who pay good money to watch their team want to see attractive football.

But it is also a fact that Spurs have only won a single trophy this century, back in 2008, so the dilemma is this: do you want fancy football or trophies?

When Tottenham don’t win, and Jose Mourinho’s style is not so easy on the eye, I understand they are getting the worst of all worlds.

But Mourinho (right) is a serial winner. Spurs are through to the League Cup final and they could potentially go a long way in the Europa League.

Yes, they were enjoyable to watch under Mauricio Pochettino – but, ultimately, what did he win?

Of all the clubs in the Premier League, Tottenham are the biggest puzzle of all. When they beat Manchester City 2-0 last November to go top of the league I was sucked into believing they were genuine title contenders.

It was classic Mourinho – only 34 per cent possession, and City had 22 shots to Tottenham’s four, but it was clinical.

Spurs were eight points ahead of City, who were down in 11th, but look at the table now. Three months later the gap is 14 points – but it’s City who are top and Tottenham who are facing a battle to finish in the top four.

Tell me, Tottenham fans: do you want clinical, winning football – or swashbuckling entertainment where your keeper is picking the ball out of his net five times?
