NEW LEVEL OF DOUBLE SPEAK
Prosecution is confirmed after postmortem
I HAVE come across a lot of political hypocrisy in my time. But I take my hat off to American Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell, who took hypocrisy to a “state of the art” level on Saturday night.
No words of mine can do justice to this level of genius so let me just reprint the CNN report: “Mcconnell criticised his former ally in a speech on the Senate floor shortly after Trump was cleared in a 57-43 vote, saying the rioters had been ‘fed wild falsehoods’ by the most powerful man on Earth. Because he was angry he had lost an election.
“Trump’s actions that preceded the riot were a disgraceful, dereliction of duty. Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.”
Mcconnell made these comments after voting to acquit Trump of those very same crimes. Absolutely unbelievable.
A HUSBAND and wife will stand trial for the alleged murder of their five-year-old daughter, it has been confirmed in the High Court.
The decision to proceed with charges against Aleksandra and Abdul Wahab was taken after a final postmortem report.
They are also set to be accused of further offences based on the “multitude” of injuries Nadia Kalinowkska sustained, a judge was told.
The development came as the child’s 26-year-old mother was once again refused bail.
Nadia died at the family’s home on Fernagh Drive, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, in December 2019. She had head and abdominal wounds, including multiple fractures said to be at various stages of healing.
Mrs Wahab, a Polish national, and her 32-year-old Pakistani husband – Nadia’s stepfather – were arrested and have remained in custody ever since.
They deny wrongdoing and claim Nadia was a clumsy, accident-prone girl who sustained the fatal injuries falling down stairs in the middle of the night.
In court yesterday, prosecutor Fiona O’kane said: “The autopsy makes for very grim reading.”
Based on its contents, charges of murder and causing or allowing the death of a child are to be pursued. “There will be additional charges in line with the multitude of injuries that the child sustained in the recent days up to her death.
“But I can confirm the prosecution decision is to proceed with murder (charges) against this applicant and her co-accused.”
Mrs Wahab’s renewed application for bail was opposed due to concerns she may attempt to flee.
Defence counsel
Frank O’donoghue argued the case against her is “very weak”.
He said: “There’s a lengthy time-span within which these injuries could have occurred. “There’s no evidence to suggest it was my client who was responsible for perpetrating any of these injuries.”
However, Mr Justice Mcfarland denied bail, and said: “There remains a significant flight risk.”
