IT’S BOYS AGAINST MEN FOR GLENS

- BY ALEX MILLS

CONOR MCMENAMIN last night opened his Glentoran goal account, helping his team to an impressive 3-1 win at Shamrock Park.

The transfer deadline day capture from Cliftonville produced a stunning performance against Matty Tipton’s youthful Portadown.

Incredibly, it was Glentoran’s first away win the Premiership campaign, while the result meant that the Ports are still looking for their first victory of 2021.

Meanwhile, Niall Currie’s Carrick Rangers battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against Glenavon at Mourneview Park.

Michael O’connor shot Gary Hamilton’s team into a first half lead, curling in a 20-yard free kick.

But Rangers levelled through Caolan Loughran’s spot kick after Sean Ward had handled an Alex Gawn shot on the line – the experienced Glenavon defender was duly sent off.

Elsewhere, on-loan Thomas Maguire hit a goal of the season contender to help Warrenpoint pinch a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Dungannon Swifts.

Teenager Rhyss Campbell produced a composed finish to shoot the Swifts into the lead, but Maguire hit a sensational scissor kick to grab a point for a goal worthy of any game.

CELTIC manager Neil Lennon, speaking about James Mcclean, says the authorities and social media platforms should have done more to tackle the problem a long time ago.

“I’m fed up of talking about it now because nothing gets done,” Lennon said before his side’s re-scheduled home game against Aberdeen tonight.

“It’s about time these people were named, shamed and dealt with by the police or the courts because it’s just totally unacceptable. It’s been going on for far too long.

“It’s alright people putting out statements saying ‘we’re going to support him’ - do it, show it.”

Mcclean (right) and his wife have revealed the full extent of the abuse they have been subjected to in separate posts on social media.

The abuse includes threats to set their house on fire “and burn everyone inside it”, while Erin Mcclean said she watched one match in fear after someone threatened to take a gun to the game.

A Stoke statement read: “Stoke City strongly condemn the vile anti-social abuse James Mcclean and his family very sadly continue to find themselves subject to.

“The club wish to reiterate their continued support.

“There is no place in society for discriminatory behaviour in any form and we believe anyone who thinks it acceptable to subject people to such abuse should be held accountable for their actions.”
