QI think that people who don’t observe lockdown rules should be severely punished because they can spread Covid. What do you think about this?

I don’t think it’s quite as cut and dried. Personally, I’ve been surprised by the many people who’ve adhered to restrictions, over

90%, even when they’re suffering financially and psychologically.

Yes, there have been occasional lapses in public behaviour but general compliance has stayed high, even in the second and third lockdowns. At least 90% of

Apeople wash hands, socially distance and wear masks most of the time. They support the rules and, if anything, err on the side of greater stringency. Recently, 85% of the public have endorsed the January lockdown and 77% think it should have been introduced sooner.

Even in students who’ve been blamed for irresponsible behaviour, ONS data paints a different picture and reveals very high levels of adherence to social distancing, very low levels of social mixing and students are far more likely than the general public to avoid leaving their accommodation.
