1991: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish announced his unexpected resignation after his team’s 4-4 FA Cup draw with Everton.

LEEDS gave the perfect answer to Holland star Marc van Bommel, who claimed the Elland Road club were not big enough to accommodate his talents. In a display of true Yorkshire grit, Leeds blocked out the threat of the PSV Eindhoven midfielder to gain a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Cup fourth-round clash. Van Bommel resorted to some dirty tactics to try and stamp his mark on the match, with several bruising challenges. Unfortunately for Leeds, they lost the return leg at home 1-0, thanks to a goal by Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. BIRTHDAYS

DEVON MALCOLM (58) – former England paceman.

VIJAY SINGH (58) – former world golf No.1 from Fiji. SHAKA HISLOP (52) – retired Reading, Newcastle, West Ham and Portsmouth goalkeeper.

MICHAEL CHANG (49) – America’s former French Open tennis champion.

NO team has scored more Premier

League penalties than Chelsea after

Mason Mount

(above) became the 25th Blues player to convert from the spot.

His goal at Southampton put him on a list of Stamford Bridge greats and not so greats to have beaten a goalkeeper from 12 yards.

Frank Lampard leads the way by some distance with 41 successful penalties. Eden Hazard (17), Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (12) and defender Frank Leboeuf (10) are the only others to reach double figures, although Jorginho has nine.

Didier Drogba scored only four, mainly because Lampard was also on the pitch, and Gianfranco Zola just one, as did Fernando Torres, Andriy Shevchenko, Diego Costa, Mark Hughes and Gustavo Poyet. SHEFFIELD UNITED’S belated bid to beat the drop is not being helped by their dismal record in London.

The 1-0 defeat at Fulham for

Chris Wilder’s rock-bottom Blades left them still stuck on just two Premier League successes in the capital – that was at Chelsea in

1992 and Crystal Palace last season.

LIONEL MESSI broke yet another record but Barcelona ended up humiliated for the second time in a week.

Alex Fernandez’s lastminute penalty earned newly-promoted Cadiz a 1-1 Nou Camp draw.

Messi (above) scored the hosts’ goal, also from the spot, in his 506th La Liga appearance, which beat former team-mate Xavi’s club record.

But Cadiz equalised from their only shot on target to leave Barca eight points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

And that heaped more pressure on Barca boss Ronald Koeman following the 4-1 home mauling by Paris Saint-germain in the Champions League.

The former Everton and Southampton boss said: “I’m more disappointed than I was on Tuesday. It’s a game that the team has to win because of its quality.”

Defender Gerard Pique added: “It hurts a lot.

“This was a great opportunity to get closer to the top in the league table.”

Romelu Lukaku got the better of Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Inter beat AC Milan 3-0 to go four points clear at the Serie A summit.

Lukaku, who had a fiery clash with the Swede in last month’s Coppa Italia quarter-final, added to Lautaro Martinez’s double.

The Belgian provided a David Beckham-esque assist for Martinez to open the scoring and then became the first Inter man to net in four consecutive Serie A derbies since 1950.

Argentina striker Martinez said: “We work every day to put Inter on top and this is the only target left for us.

“Lukaku has still room for improvement. He is young, he works hard on and off the pitch.

“We are happy to have him with us.”

Ibrahimovic was subbed at 2-0 down and Milan boss Stefano Pioli revealed: “He asked to be replaced because he had cramp.”

TIM KRUL wants Norwich’s points cushion at the top of the table to grow and grow.

With promotion rivals Brentford and Swansea surprisingly losing, Teemu Pukki’s 15th goal of the season took the Canaries seven points clear at the top.

A month ago, Daniel Farke’s side embarked on a four-match run where they didn’t just not win but didn’t score either. And keeper Krul is keen to avoid any more ups and downs.

“We need to hit the two-points average and we are above that at the moment,” he said. “We need to get that cushion as big as possible and that’s our motivation.

“You don’t want to go to Barnsley on the last day of the season having to do something because that’s a hard place.”

The Canaries rarely rack up big wins, mainly because they miss so many chances. Pukki (above) was the culprit this time with one-on-one failures in each half against Rotherham keeper Viktor Johansson.

“I wish we had made it a bit easier,” added Krul. “I still think we have a few gears but, if we keep nicking these one-nils, I’ll take that.”

The struggling Millers should have been ahead in the 11th minute, but Clark Robertson’s header from a corner was ruled out for an invisible foul on Krul.

Pukki struck six minutes later, charging through after Todd Cantwell’s dummy of Emi Buendia’s diagonal ball had unhinged the visitors.

Defender Robertson said: “We dug in and showed what we’re all about. We’ve got more than enough to stay in this division.”
