A GOLD ring thought to have been buried in the 1600s amid a family feud is set to fetch £30,000 at auction after being unearthed by a metal detectorist.

The ring, featuring a “mammoth” chalcedony gemstone and carved with the initials GL and three candles, was found in the grounds of Castern Hall, near Ilam, Staffs, in 2018.

The finder, a 64-year-old retired fishmonger who does not wish to be named said: “This is the best and most important find I’ve ever made.”

He will share proceeds with the landowner when the ring is sold by Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall, Derbys on Thursday.

Family records have identified the ring’s owner as possibly being Geoffrey Lowe who died in 1637.

POLICE have been accused of wasting resources after releasing pictures of an electric scooter being towed away on a huge recovery lorry.

The lightweight 20mph e-scooter was strapped to a tow truck after a banned and uninsured rider failed to stop for police.

West Mercia Police tweeted details after they caught the offender in Worcester, writing: “Not the best idea to fail to stop for police.”

But they were accused of “overkill” on social media with one person writing: “Could have just thrown that in the boot.”

Another person asked “how much tax money did this cost?” – but some defended the police, with one writing: “The owner will pay for the recovery.”

WOMEN are ignoring key symptoms of ovarian cancer, a survey has revealed.

Just 17% said they would make an urgent GP’S appointment if they felt bloated for three weeks or more – a common sign of the potentially fatal illness.

The same low number told the poll for charity Target Ovarian Cancer they would book an appointment if they needed to urinate more often or more urgently – another key symptom.

Charity chief Annwen Jones urged women to act faster. She said: “It’s absolutely vital women know persistent bloating needs to be checked out by a GP.

“Getting ovarian cancer symptoms checked out promptly and starting treatment quickly makes all the difference.”
