A REWARD has been offered for information leading to a conviction after the mutilated remains of a dog were found.

The animal, believed to be about 10 years old, was discovered in the Derrybeg/meadow area of Newry, Co Down, last

Friday. The male dog appears to have had a wooden fence post driven through his abdomen as he lay on the ground and it is not clear yet if the Staffordshire Bull terrier had been alive or dead at the time of the impaling.

The USPCA is offering a £500 reward for information leading to a conviction of the person or persons involved. A member of the public who was walking in the popular wooded area came across the disturbing discovery in open ground last Friday.

They alerted the USPCA, who have been co-ordinating with the relevant agencies to investigate the circumstances. A spokesperson for the animal welfare charity, said: “If you have any information regarding this incident, particularly in relation to the sighting of a black Staffordshire bull terrier dog approximately 10 years of age, please contact the USPCA on 028 3025 1000 immediately.”
