Pork scratchings voted our fave snack at pubs

- BY RUKI SAYID Consumer Editor

PORK scratchings have been named the nation’s favourite pub nibble.

With outside bars hoping to open soon, the snack has been crowned king of the munchies, seeing off crisps, peanuts and Scotch eggs.

Scratchings – first sold in paper bags by butchers in the 1930s as crackling – are just as popular today, pushing salted peanuts into second place and dry roasted peanuts into third.

Crisps bagged fourth and fifth spot in a survey, with salt and vinegar just pipping ready salted. Bacon fries were sixth.

The survey of 2,000 adults also found one in three of us is looking forward to sitting down for a traditional pub roast.

And threequarters said the pub was their number one “happy place”.

David Arnold, director of pollsters Perspectus Global, which carried out the survey, said: “We wanted to look into what people love and have missed most about their Peanuts local pub. We were delighted to see the pork scratching top the list of best-loved snacks.

“We hope the nation is looking forward to getting back to meeting friends and family over a drink and a bite to eat.”

Pubs report being flooded with bookings as many people look forward to their first drink outside the home since before Christmas.

A study by money.co.uk predicts one in four will head to the boozer within the first six days of restrictions being eased.

It estimates we will spend £447million within a week.

One in 10 plan to have a drink outside on the first day it is permitted.

Those aged 18 to 24 will be among the first to raise a glass with a quarter popping in for a pint within the first three days compared to 15% of 35 to 44-year-olds and 11% of 45-54s. ruki.sayid@mirror.co.uk @Rukisayid

AUber’s arrival in London in 2012 had a big impact. However, things had been improving for black cab drivers before the pandemic.

Since then, demand for black cabs in the capital has fallen at least 85%. It is unclear what impact Uber’s changes will have on these rivals. Steve Mcnamara, of the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association, said: “Uber’s hand has been forced by the Supreme Court. They fought it every step of the way and had to be dragged kicking and screaming.”
