come you got that easy bit?” The couple, who were both dressed in shades of green, recalled the warm welcome they received during their visit to Ireland last March just ahead of the first lockdowns. William said: “We were so thrilled to be able to visit Ireland just over a year ago, a few short weeks before all of

our lives were turned upside down by the pandemic.”

Kate added: “The warm welcome that we received everywhere was a testament to the friendship between our two countries.”

The duke said they recognised this St Patrick’s Day would be different but he hoped people would still be able to celebrate.

William added: “We know that for

Irish people all around the world today won’t be the same as normal but we hope you can celebrate safely in any case.”

Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheal Martin has already urged the public to enjoy a safe St Patrick’s Day.

And he stressed it was very important that people everywhere avoid social gatherings amid the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.

A HAULIER appeared in court yesterday in connection with the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants found in a refrigerated container in Essex in 2019.

Caolan Gormley, 23, of Kedew Road in Caledon, Co Tyrone, faces a charge of conspiracy to assist illegal immigration. At a brief hearing at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, it was alleged Gormley allowed vehicles in his road haulage fleet to facilitate the entry of migrants into the UK.

Prosecutor Russell Tyner said Gormley did not faces charges of manslaughter for the deaths. The case was sent to the Old Bailey for a plea and trial preparation hearing on April 14.

Gormley, who appeared at the hearing via video link, was granted unconditional bail until that date.

He did not give an indication of plea and spoke only to confirm his name to confirm he had understood the proceedings.

The bodies of the Vietnamese nationals were discovered at an Essex industrial estate shortly after the container arrived on a ferry from Zeebrugge in Belgium in the early hours of October 23, 2019.
