Sniffing out brand new best friends

- SARA WALLIS with

Channel 4, 8pm SCRUFFY Westie stray Grant has seen some tough times, arriving at the Wood Green animal charity in a very sorry state.

He’s shaking, with infected eyes and matted fur all over, but the staff there are hoping to find the neglected pup a better home.

“When you see an animal in that state you just want to fix it,” says Emma.

“We’ll get him better.”

This touching show unites people with potential pets in need, and it all makes for heartwarming telly.

Demand for dogs has skyrocketed over the past year and staff are doing their best to match abandoned pooches with hopeful owners. Also in this episode, Zach would like to find a dog that isn’t fazed by his Tourette’s, after his previous four-legged pal, Scrappy, died last year. Zach says: “Scrappy distracted me from my worries. “I need a dog that’s not afraid of loud noises. I’ve got about 12 or 13 ticks. Jumping on the spot or throwing my neck back can be quite physical.”

And staff hope that Rocco the Jack Russell could be the perfect personality match.

Elsewhere, nine-year-old Rohan arrives with his mum and dad, who were both struck down with Covid-19 last year. “I was so scared and worried,” says only child Rohan, who wants “a future best friend”. He has done his research, even creating a Google document, listing characteristics like intelligence and playfulness. Staff introduce him to Patterdale terrier puppy Friday, but the bouncy pooch might be just a bit too enthusiastic.
