MADD TO LEAVE HIM ON SIDELINES

Foxes boss Rodgers backs his man to win back England place

JAMES MADDISON is ready to return for Leicester tomorrow as he bids to make the England squad for the Euros.

Maddison has missed six games with a hip injury, halting his red-hot form after 11 goals and six assists.

But Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers revealed he is back in training and will be in his squad for Manchester City’s visit in the Premier League.

Rodgers said: “He is not 100 per cent match fit but in terms of his football fitness he looks great.

“The last few weeks he has been working with the team. This week he has stepped it up and looks great, which is really good news. Hopefully he can stay fit now until the end of the season. I know the qualities of James Maddison.

“He has been a huge player for me in my time here. I always believe he is only going to get better.” That said, Maddison is not guaranteed to walk straight into

Leicester’s team after a

run of three straight wins, with Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy up front and Ayoze Perez in behind.

But Rodgers insists Maddison, who has one cap, should still have enough time to make a case for inclusion in England’s squad for this summer’s tournament.

Rodgers added:

“He has shown consistently the level of performance that warrants a place within the squad. If he can get back playing and get back to the level he has been at then it gives Gareth Southgate and his staff a decision to make. He needs to concentrate on getting back for Leicester and into some sort of rhythm to finish the season strong.” Portuguese full-back Ricardo Pereira is also in training and set to be in this weekend’s squad, while fellow attacking ace Harvey Barnes is expected to return to training this month. Rodgers, meanwhile, has hailed Sergio Aguero as a Manchester City icon after reflecting on the outgoing striker’s spell since joining a decade ago. Rodgers said: “He came in here as a very young player and his first game was against my Swansea team. He scored two goals – one at the back post when he slid in and then one from about 25 yards which was an incredible goal into the top corner.

“He has continued to do that over the last decade. He gets on with his work and has been a real iconic figure for them.”
