Tevez went from United to City.. so why couldn’t Aguero go from City to United?
SERGIO AGUERO’S legacy at Manchester City is secure – the club’s record scorer, including the most dramatic Premier League goal in history.
But now it is official that he is leaving the Etihad as a free agent this summer.
If he stays in the Premier League I would love to see Aguero rock the boat by moving across town and signing for Manchester United.
I don’t honestly believe United will seize the day and make it happen – but why shouldn’t it?
It’s only 12 years since another Argentinian, Carlos Tevez, made the short journey from Old Trafford to Eastlands and became a title winner with United and City. Aguero has been linked already with Chelsea, which would hardly be a retrograde step going from one powerful, multinational squad to another.
I’ve also seen him linked with Arsenal – and he’s better than the Gunners’ current firepower.
At 32, surely he’s got a couple of seasons left in the tank at a top-four club, so if United’s new director of football John Murtough wants to make waves, there’s a surefire way of doing it.
For me, Aguero is the best foreign player of the Premier League era.
Barring a miracle, he will leave City as a five-times title winner, and the highest compliment I can pay him is this: If you needed someone to bury a chance in the box to save your life, I would pray it fell to Sergio Aguero.
If Manchester United came calling for his services, why would he not jump at the chance?
He would be able to stay in the area, knowing United should be offering him Champions League football next season, and he would give them a cutting edge in the box that has sometimes been missing when visiting teams have sat deep at Old Trafford this season.
United have been down the road of bringing in experienced forwards before, and I would regard Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani as signings worthy of the shirt. Fans in the red part of Manchester would love it if the striker with the best minutes-per-goal ratio in Premier League history followed suit.
Of all the players who have scored at least 10 goals in the top flight over the last 30 years, Aguero’s strike-rate of hitting the net every 108 minutes is almost 15 minutes better than anyone else.
So if United were tempted to return the compliment to City, after they took Tevez across the Mancunian Way, I would go all out to get him.
For all their pulling power, there are no guarantees United will be able to sign Erling Haaland or Harry Kane this summer.
Why hesitate when the greatest Premier League finisher of all is out there?
