Legend carl re tires after defeat in dubai
TRIBUTES have been pouring in for Carl Frampton following his retirement from boxing.
The 34-year-old lost out in his bid to become Ireland’s first three-weight world champion after he was stopped by Jamel Herring on Saturday night.
The Jackal confirmed his decision to retire in the ring in the immediate aftermath of the devastating defeat in Dubai.
He leaves the sport as Northern Ireland’s only two-weight world champion and a former Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year.
He said in the aftermath of defeat: “It is disappointing the way it ended, with
Jamie [Moore] throwing in the towel. As a coach it’s his decision. He has to look after the fighter’s safety.
“I’d have fought there until I got carried out, probably. I don’t know how bad it was looking towards the end but I would always have kept fighting.
“My safety and their fighters’ safety is of the utmost importance. They felt it was the right thing to do.”
Stars from the world of sport and entertainment offered their praise for the hero from Belfast, with hundreds of tributes also coming in from fans.
Former heavyweight world champion Frank Bruno tweeted: “I must give a special mention to Carl Frampton who was hoping to win the WBO belt. Carl accepted defeat with grace & dignity. He is now retiring to spend quality time with his family. Happy retirement Carl.” Legendary former champion Andre Ward added: “Congrats @Realcframpton on a wonderful career. You ducked no one. Class act!” Hall of Famer
Joe Calzaghe said on Twitter: “Congratulations @Realcframpton on a great career! Always loved watching you fight. Time to enjoy your retirement and be proud. All the best mate. Joe.”
And American champion Herring showed his class by tweeting: “Yes, this probably the biggest victory of my career, but I just want for everyone to pray and show love for @Realcframpton . I’ll always be a fan, and he’s a true gentleman. God bless you, my man. Please make it home safely to your beautiful family.”
Comedian Patrick Kielty posted: “Thank you @Realcframpton For dreamin big. Winning bigger. And bringing us all on the ride. For wearing the biggest heart on your sleeve. And
never forgetting people at home. Winners don’t always look out for underdogs. But champions do. It’s why you’ll always be ours. Take a bow.”

Unbeaten Belfast boxer Michael Conlan added: “What a champion, what a legend @Realcframpton hold your head high, enjoy the rest of your life champ!”
Rising US star Shakur Stevenson said: “Legendary career @Realcframpton got my respect for sure.” Meanwhile, Carl’s wife Christine voiced her relief at her husband’s retirement.
She tweeted after the fight: “Wanted him out a long time ago. Thanks everyone. We love you all.” Fans also hailed the achievements of The Jackal. One tweeted:
“A hero to Catholics, a hero to Protestants, the epitome of everything that’s great about Belfast. @Realcframpton thank you for the memories.”
And another added: “Champion that went out on his shield.. 2 weight world champion, 28 wins out of 31.. a humble man Frampton in and outside the ring!
