THE child who died after being struck by a car on Saturday evening was Kaitlin Mccoubrey-fullerton, police have confirmed.

The seven-year-old passed away following the incident on Springhill Avenue in West Belfast.

Residents have been left reeling after the tragedy, a councillor said.

Sinn Fein’s Steven Corr added: “The community of the Upper Springfield is devastated following a tragic road traffic accident in Springhill.

“Our local community is shocked and saddened following the loss of this very young life.

“It has left many local people reeling and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected at this time.

“I will liaise with the local families and community and I appeal for the media to respect the privacy of the affected families during this very difficult time.” Police released the victim’s name in a statement yesterday. One person has been arrested.

Supt Gillian Kearney said: “Shortly after 6.10pm, Kaitlin was struck by a car. Tragically, she passed away at the scene. One person has been arrested and is assisting police with their enquiries.

“Specially trained officers are continuing to provide support to those impacted during this difficult time.

“The Springhill Avenue has reopened following the incident.

“Enquiries are continuing and officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage or any other information to contact police on 101.”
