We’re divided by Covid passports

- Len Goodwin, Doncaster

So this Government is counting on two free tests a week for all English adults, along with the likelihood of vaccine passports, in a bid to end lockdown and get us back to normal life. But will it prove to be another expensive fiasco like test and trace?

We all want to see an end to restrictions but with the Tories’ track record, I wonder if there will be some other unforeseen disaster around the corner.

They need to get this one right. And while I can see the value of vaccine passports for foreign travel, it would be unfair to require people to have them to get into pubs, restaurants and so on.

The hospitality industry has been the hardest hit by the pandemic and is the last to open up. Adding another layer of bureaucracy could curb trade.

I think campaign groups such as Liberty are just desperate to jump on any bandwagon they can find. I recently received my bus pass for which I had to submit ID and evidence of address and eligibility. I would be perfectly happy to do the same for any vaccine passport which would allow me to feel safer in pubs, clubs, cafés and restaurants. As for it being another step towards an identity card, it would be nothing of the sort. You would only have to carry it if you intended to eat out or go for a pint.

When will this madness end? Millions of people

have lost their livelihoods, or are affected by mental health issues, while loneliness and alcoholism have risen due to ministers’ mishandling of the pandemic.

Now have the possibility of Covid vaccination certificates and all that brings with it.

In view of the fact that millions have been vaccinated, along with those most at risk, why can’t we just get back to as near normal as we can without extra restrictions?

The Government needs to give the population some reasons to make life worth living again.

It could be that more people will go to pubs, restaurants and theatres if they know everyone there has either shown proof of vaccination and/or a recent negative test.

A type of health certification would not be an infringement of civil liberties as a number of MPS are bizarrely saying, but rather a common sense move during a crisis that is not over yet.

I bet they soon change their tune when they want to fly overseas.

Mark Iles, Newark, Notts

If a vaccine passport or app becomes necessary to go into a restaurant, theatre or cinema, once again the older generation will be at a disadvantage.

Many don’t have smartphones or aren’t online.

A friend was late sending in her census form as it took ages to arrive after phoning to request one, and even at our doctor’s they prefer you do an online consultation.

Diane Hughesdon, South London

I’m fully in favour of having to carry documentation proving you have had the Covid-19 vaccine in order to enter places of hospitality, theatres, restaurants, concerts and for purposes of travel on public transport at home or abroad.

These are unprecedented times. We all have to do our bit to help fight this terrible disease and not rely on others to protect us.

Alison Hammond, Derby

Where do we stop with vaccine passports? After all, I am pretty certain I’m as likely to come into contact with the Covid virus in a supermarket as I would be at a sporting event or a music festival.
